ALLIANCE, Ohio – Senior Nathan Bower-Malone (Stow) scored 53 points breaking the single game scoring record en route to a Mount Union 90-77 defeat of York (Pa.) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday night.

When Bower-Malone started the game that set another school record for most games played as a Purple Raider with 110 games. He scored 32 of his career-high 53 in the second half to help the Raiders pull away from York.

Mount Union (27-3) had four other scorers on the night with senior D'Vontay Friga (Cuyahoga Falls), sophomore Braedon Poole (McDonald) scoring 10 and seniors Tanner Slack (New Concord John Glenn), and John Carroll (Massillon / Tuslaw) scoring nine and eight. Carroll grabbed 13 rebounds on the night for the Raiders.

York (Pa.) (23-6) was led by Jared Wagner and Darin Gordon both with 16.

Mount Union began the game on a 6-0 run with York answering with a 5-0 run. Bower-Malone then scored eight points in a 15-5 run that got the Raiders a lead of 21-10. Mount Union held a halftime lead of 38-30 with Bower-Malone scoring 21 to lead all scorers.

Both teams hit shots to start the second half with York pulling within three 46-43 with 15:09 left. Mount Union pushed the lead to nine on a Friga free-throw with 11:37 left. York closed to within two with 8:33 to go. Mount Union however went on a 28-17 run to end the game with Bower-Malone breaking the school record on a free throw with 1:53 left giving Mount Union a 79-65 lead.

With the win No. 5 nationally ranked Mount Union's men's basketball team advances to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament to play No. 9 Wittenberg, who was a 77-73 winner over Susquehanna. A time and host are to be determined.
