Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's men's lacrosse team drops second game of the season as they fall to Centre (Ky.) Saturday afternoon 17-8 at Mount Union Stadium.
The Purple Raiders (1-2) were led by freshman Micahel Taylor (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) who tallied five points in the contest with three goals and two assists. Taylor now has four season goals and five season assists.
The Colonels (2-0) were led by junior duo Zack Connors and Peter Murphy and sophomore Wesley Hardman who all tallied four points in the game. Connor had two goals and two assists as Murphy had one goal and three assists while Hardman scored four goals for Centre.
Centre scored first as Hardman scored at the 13:13 mark to give the Colonels the 1-0 lead. Mount Union put two goals in from Taylor and freshman Liam Creagh (Massapequa, Ny/Massapequa) to take the 2-1 lead with 7:08 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Colonels scored two more goals to take the 3-2 lead to the end of the first quarter. Centre would score seven unanswered goals in the second quarter before Mount Union freshman Josh Bender (Delaware/Delaware-Hayes) scored at the 5:36 mark on a man-up opportunity. The Colonels would net two more before taking the 12-3 lead into the halftime break.
Mount Union would answer every goal the Colonels would put up in the third quarter, 3-3, as Centre would take the 15-6 lead at the end of the third quarter. Centre would score first in the final quarter on a man-up opportunity as Mount Union answered with a goal at the 5:52 mark.
Centre extended their lead to 10 goals at the 1:57 mark, 17-7. Mount Union, man down, would score with under 10 seconds in the game as freshman Carl Sopczyk (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) scored on a pass from Taylor to cut the Colonels lead to nine. Centre would go on to the 17-8 victory as time expired.
Mount Union returns to action Saturday, March 16th as they travel to Kenyon where face-off is slated for 1:00 pm.
