Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio - Michael Taylor (Broadview Heights/Brecksville) scored a game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Mount Union men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 win over St. Vincent (Pa.) in the season opener at Mount Union Stadium on Saturday.
The Purple Raiders (1-0) got a hat trick from Hogan Harris (Medina/Medina) and a pair of goals from Josh Stephens (North Canton/Green) in the win.
Taylor, Toren Moore (Hilliard/Hilliard Darby) and Chris Daley (Wilmington, Del./Dupont) all scored a goal with Daley adding three assists.
Collin Peters (Portland, Ore/Sunset) saved 21 shots to lead the Raiders defensively.
St. Vincent (1-1) was led by Tim Oxenreiter with three goals, Nick Pensyl with two goals and Bryce Pasquariello with two goals.
After a scoreless first quarter the Bearcats scored the games first goal at the 11:28 mark in the second quarter. Mount Union tied the game on Harris' first goal just 45 seconds later.
The Raiders scored two more goals in the second period, one by Moore and one by Harris, before St. Vincent scored in the final minute of the half to make the score 3-2 Mount Union at the half.
St. Vincent started the second half by scoring three unanswered goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter to take a 5-3 lead. Stephens scored his first goal of the game to cut the lead to one but St. Vincent tacked on another goal and led 6-4 at the end of the third.
Harris opened the fourth quarter with his third goal of the game but was answered by Oxenreiter's third goal a minute later. Stephens scored his second goal with 4:44 left in the game to bring the score to 7-6.
With 48 seconds left in the game Daley circled around the net and fired a right-handed shot that found its mark and tied the game at 7-7 at the end of regulation.
Less than two minutes into the overtime period Daley found Taylor on the left side of the goal and Taylor promptly ended the game with his first goal of the season.
The men's lacrosse team is back in action on Wednesday (March 4) as they take thier spring break trip to Frostburg, Maryland to play Frostburg State at 4:00 pm.
