Box Score LATROBE, Pa.—The Mount Union men's lacrosse team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 14-11 victory over St. Vincent (Pa.). The Bearcats are now 0-1 to begin their 2016 campaign.
The Purple Raiders were led by Chris Daley (Wilmington, Del./Dupont) with three goals. Nine players from Mount Union chipped in scores for the win. Andrew Rosati (Streetsboro/ Walsh Jesuit) and Nick Ameo (Concord/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) both went 7 of 14 in faceoffs while Ameo also led the team in groundballs (6).
St. Vincent was led by Jeremy Kennedy with a game-high four goals while five other Bearcats contributed to the scoring effort.
Carl Sopczyk (Glen Falls, N.Y./Glen Falls) gave Mount Union the early lead in the first quarter off a score with a 10:11 remaining. St. Vincent immediately answered with a goal of its own with 7:43 remaining in the quarter. Both teams traded offensive production and ended the first quarter tied 3-3.
The Bearcats began to extend their lead when Hunter Sharp's goal gave them a 5-3 lead with 7:32 left in the half. Liam Creagh (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) tied the game for the Raiders when he scored with 3:18 remaining in the half. Kennedy scored again to give St. Vincent a 7-6 lead going into halftime.
Josh Stephens (North Canton/Green) tied the game again for the Raiders to begin the third by scoring a goal within the first two minutes of the quarter. The Bearcats went up again by two scores off goals by Alex Mueser and Kennedy with 2:01 left in the quarter. St. Vincent kept its 11-9 lead to finish the third.
Mount Union rallied back in the fourth quarter to earn the victory. The Raiders scored five unanswered goals in the fourth to surpass the Bearcats 14-5. Hogan Harris (Medina/Medina) scored with 3:19 left in the game to end the string of five straight goals and solidify the win.
The Raiders are back in action on Wednesday, March 9th, as they host Washington and Jefferson. Game begins at 7:30 p.m.
