Men's Lacrosse: Purple Raiders Use Middle Quarters To Pull Away From Muskingum In Win

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- Mount Union's men's lacrosse team defeated Muskingum 11-8 in regular season play Wednesday night.

As part of the conference only schedule in 2021, this game was among four of the games that will not count in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings.

The Purple Raiders got four goals from Alek Kungle (Hartville / Lake) and two goals from Clay Barkan (Chagrin Falls / Kenston)

Eli Ciotti (Canonsburg, Pa. / Linsly), Matt Bisono (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park), Alex Ellison (Uniontown / Lake) and Logan Gebhart (McDonald, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) and Justin Kroeger (Mentor) all scored one goal to improve Mount Union's record to 4-3 overall and stayed at 2-2 in the OAC.

Muskingum got three goals from Hunter McGuire and fell to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the OAC.

Muskingum scored the first two goals of the game. Mount Union responded with two goals of its own from Barkan and Kungle. Muskingum finished the first quarter with a goal and a 3-2 lead.

Mount Union grabbed four goals in the second quarter while holding Muskingum to one. Scoring for the Raiders in that 4-0 run were Gebhart, Ciotti, Barkan and Kungle. Muskingum got a goal at the end of the half with Mount Union leading 6-4.

Mount Union again held Muskingum to one goal in the third quarter and scoring three of our own. Scoring for Mount Union was Kungle with two goals and Ellison with one to take a 9-5 lead after three quarters.

Muskingum started the fourth quarter with the first three goals to close within 1 at 9-8 but Mount Union finished the game on a 2-0 run to win 11-8 with goals from Bisono and Kroeger.

The Raiders got on offense thanks to face-off specialist Mike Doyle (New Port Richey, Fla. / JW Mitchell) who won 8-of-13 faceoffs while Kyle Reihner (Scranton, Pa. / Scranton Prep) had 20 saves for the Raiders in goal.

Mount Union's next game against Heidelberg has been cancelled due to Covid protocols at Heidelberg. Mount Union will next play at home hosting Capital in a regular season matchup next Wednesday, April 14th at 7 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
