Nationally Ranked Teams

The eight teams in the regional include four teams ranked in the top-20 in the nation in #1 Calvin (Mich.), #9 Mount Union, #10 Wittenberg and #16 Chicago.

Mount Union

The Purple Raiders are making their fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament overall and fourth in the last five seasons.  They were regular season champions and earned the Ohio Athletic Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 win over Heidelberg in the OAC Tournament title match.

Mount Union has a 3-3 record in its previous three trips to the NCAA Tournament.  In 2009, Mount Union beat Lebanon Valley (Pa.) in the first round, only to lose at Juniata (Pa.) in the second.  They repeated the exact same feat -- a win against Lebanon Valley and loss to Juniata -- in their 2011 tournament run at Neumann University in suburban Philadelphia. Last season in Grand Rapids, the Raiders defeated Medaille (N.Y.) before falling to host Calvin in the second round.

Season Recap

After starting the 2013 campaign off 21-0, the Raiders took their first three losses in the Midwest Tournament in Michigan to NCAA Tournament teams Calvin, Hope and Wittenberg. Mount Union would bounce back and take eight of their last nine matches to end the season with a 30-4 record, an OAC regular season title for the second straight year and a second OAC Tournament title in three years.

Individual awards earned by the Raiders so far include All-OAC First Team honors for senior Taylor Webb and junior Nicole Snyder, junior Lauren Mastroine was selected to the All-OAC Second Team and grabbed OAC Libero of the Year honors while junior Sarah Schleich would be an All-OAC honorable mention selection.

Leader Of The Pack

Mount Union head coach Leigh Ann Swartz is in her eighth season and has 202-61 record with two OAC regular season titles and two OAC Tournament titles.  On the way to OAC regular season and tournament titles this past season, Swartz led the Raiders to a school-record 21-0 start to the season, a No. 7 ranking in the nation -- the highest in school history and at 30 wins right now tied the school record for wins in a single season.  The 2006 OAC Coach of the Year has accomplished much on the court and especially this season off the court as she is expecting twins at any time.  Assistant coach Melissa Mahnke -- an All-American for the Purple Raiders -- has been coaching the team for the last two weeks and will be in charge at the regional.

Three New - Four Old

Mount Union has played four of its potential seven opponents in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in 2013.  The teams that the Purple Raiders played during the 2013 regular season are Buffalo State, Bluffton, Calvin and Wittenberg. The Carnegie Mellon Tartans are making their third appearance to the NCAA Tournament with their last coming in 2008. This season, the Raiders have wins against Buffalo State (3-0) and Bluffton (3-0) with losses to Wittenberg (3-1) and Calvin (3-0).

Mount Union senior Taylor Webb was named All-OAC First Team after finishing first on the team with 352 kills (fourth in OAC) and 3.17 kills per set (third in the OAC).  She also joined the school's 1,000 Kills club earlier this season, ranked sixth. Webb posted a .292 hitting percentage, good enough for fifth in the OAC.
